i'm willing to take a few hissy fits if I can't go.

can someone please help me get this figured out. either help me not
desperately want to feel the rock under my fingers or help me to go
climbing.

it's no secret that Silvia and I have been having some trouble
getting our house finished, and there have been some major frustrations.

tonight i was talking with some friends about frustrations with the
tradesmen we have been dealing with, and it was bothering me. there
was something about what i was saying (why do they keep going away
and not coming back for a long time....it's not done right...etc...)
and the way i was feeling that was bothering me.

after thinking about it for a while I started to realize a few things.

there is so much opportunity in the trades, that quality is no longer
NECESSARILY the bottom line. on so many levels.

there are no concrete 'consequences' for sloppy or late work.

I guess there are a lot of directions my thoughts could have gone
from there, but I was focused on my own feelings about it. I have
friends in the trades, my brother, father-in-law and brother-in-law
are all trades people, what would I want for them? Under what
circumstances would THEY complete work incorrectly, or late, or just
in an annoying, unprofessional way.

If you want a positive experience with trades people, I think you
just have to set it up the way you want it to go. The person who is
paying for the service is the BOSS and needs to take responsibility
for this.

This makes me feel better, because it means that positive experiences
are in my future when I learn how to be a better boss...it's on ME
this way.

Starbucks is one half block from work. I can walk there in less than a minute from the front door of the school.

I don't love their coffee luckily, otherwise, by the end of the school year I would probably be trying to sneak quickly over there between classes.

Today I witnessed someone ordering a 'grande half-caf, low fat, no foam, latte'.

Wow. That was neat.

so, my most humbling moment of my first week of teaching at my new job had to be teaching Kindergarten. They haven't got a hint of anything but cuteness, but not a single iota of patience either, you hesitate and they are GONE.

ah. it's fun, trying to remember, and re-learn the energies of 5 year olds. how to pace the lesson, how much to try to cover, when to stop repeating yourself to make sure you have been understood...how much to let them have a chance to say stuff....it goes on....you watch a good Kindergarden teacher at work:

they make it look effortless like a well-honed olympic athlete (pick your favourite athlete...).

just go ahead and try to replicate that, drop yourself in there.

uh-unh. it's not so easy as it looks!!

the pace of change is incredible - there are routines within routines, establishing the COMPLEX schedule of decision making ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS. So it's not luck.

Ah well. Humbled by KG's. But it's like your first time trying to get up a rock climb. It's rarely perfect, and always feels easier the second...third...fourth time.

EXPERIENCE. Or is it just OPTIMISM, DENIAL or OTHERWISE?

The House.

The house is a very un-finished place. I'm currently highjacking someone in the neighborhood's unprotected high speed wireless connection....not bad....

Except for the reason behind it. NO home phone. Big cell phone bills!

No home phone...the people at ROger's seem to have a bit of difficulty with CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Sympatico was not much better setting up my high speed 'dry loop' (called such because it doesn't go down a BELL phoneline, but a Roger's phoneline.....all inter-related of course). But, thankfully the people at Sympatico informed me that I DO have service at the new address. Which is odd, because the phone wire is hanging in mid air at the attachment to the house...connected to WHAT?

Electrical. IT's not easy, trying to get the best out of your electrician. They are far too busy. THis city needs a lot more electricians.

We have a new stove that is sitting in our front porch. We can't install it because it is too heavy for Sil and me to move...needs a burlier arm.... Our frig hasn't arrived yet. Maybe when they bring that they can move the stove for us. MOst likely I will move it tomorrow though.

No heat or A/C....electrician thing. Not a biggie for now, but things can change fast.....

But hey, it's FRIDAY MAN...YEAH! THings are good at the McBurney house camp! Fire up the barbie-Q!

thanks to Brooklyn Funk Esssentials I have now ridden the L train and feel like a million bucks.

painted some ceilings with Cesare today. It's always good to be humbled day after day by old men who seem to be able to work tirelessly. When I get home, and have a beer on the couch I feel like crying because I'm so drained. Maybe I can get used to it. Physical labour work is so rewarding, especially on just a few hours of sleep.

Mix that with the emotional turmoil of leaving your home of 10 years.

Add a little shot of new job and maybe a teenage daughter starting grade 7....now you are feeling the love of a middle aged man.

I have turned off a certain part of me. I'm not sure what part that is or if I will ever turn it back on. Let's call that part 'Y'. I don't know why, just for fun. It's the first letter I saw when I glanced (yes, I actually glanced) at the keyboard. With 'Y' turned off, I walk faster, I paint like a robot. With 'Y' turned off I feel strong and capable in so many ways, yet much less 'liberal'.

It really feels like a switch or a fuse that has blown. Like a threshold that I have crossed. And maybe it's a one way street.

I turn around and see bikes piled up against the wall, waiting to be ridden. I see climbing holds in a box, waiting to be pulled on. I see hundreds, possibly thousans of screws on the floor. Their fate is the garbage. Poor them, I hope I don't end up there. Fuck hope. I'm not going in the garbage.

Had a great final session last night - everything worked out as planned.

I set up the garage and did a couple of easy problems to warm up, then Patrick showed up and the real fun began.

After Patrick came Ken, then my neighbor Dan (the sculptor), then Guido, Julie, Duane and right near the end came Graeme, which was good. The highlight of the night for me was climbing the 'Fly Like An Eagle' route to the same song by Steve Miller - hilarious. Ken did the final ascent of 'Eagle Torture' and Patrick destroyed his wrists on the highly coveted 'Traverse of the Not So Bald Eagle'. We (I) had a bit of an eagle theme going on last night with my first problem I made up being called 'Eagle Grip', climaxing (not quite literally) with 'Fly Like and Eagle' and culminating with the improvised solo free onsight ascent of the longball 'The Eagle Has Left the Building'.

Tonight (THURSDAY) I will be taking her down with Dan, while cooking my famous 'Consolation Eagle Ribs'. hopefully I'll be able to serve the ribs by about 10pm...

Lucille has a cold today, so no daycare for her...but that means no renovation for me! Not good, considering we need to be in that house by next Thursday, and it's not looking too good right now! Today should bring a LOT of change, flooring and tiles are going down, primer is being finished on the top 2 floors (hopefully).

There's always a lot more going on than just that though: getting in touch with the phone guys, appliance guys, flooring guys, electrical guys, canceling appointments, making appointments, planning my next school year, can you tell I'm a little bit pre-occupied with a couple of things?

Still, it's a pretty exciting time of our lives, it's just difficult to take time to appreciate how excited we are, isn't it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCILLE!

So - little miss McBurney has now turned 1 year old.

She started it off with a bang, literally. She woke up screaming (not that unusual, but it sure set the tone.) and followed it up by doing a full-contact body wrestle on her diaper changes (an especially good struggle on the poopy diaper!).

The best part of the diaper change was when Sil was doing diaper change #2 of the morning (the messy one) and Lucille decided to take her glass baby bottle and throw it on the floor, smashing it into pieces. (I think that may have upset mommy a bit, but she made up for it by forgetting her cell phone at home.)

We walked Iyma to camp (island canoe camp), walked home (markham street), walked to the new house (montrose), walked to the Faema shop to buy coffee and cups. Then, on the way back to Markham Street, we stopped for birthday chinese food on Bloor Street! Lucille got to drink water out of a straw for the first time - almost drowned herself, but had lots of fun. She had trees (broccoli), white trees (cauliflower), zooks (zucchini), tofu and rice - what a good baby. Here's her fortune:

Right in the middle of our renovation job, Sil goes back to work, I get to watch after Lucille full-time, and it's a crazy HEAT WAVE with record breaking temperatures.

Makes me want to sleep all the time - and I lament the fact that my coffee machine is at the new house - it's drastically reducing the amount of caffeine I can consume in a day!

Right now Lucy is in the cupboard....I'm going to take a picture....ok, so I took a few...:

the land of home renovations

some time after tearing down walls, scooping up some plaster and lath, dumping it in the dumpster, pulling nails out of joists......

...at some point, maybe it was the first time I sat down in the sun in the back yard.....but at some point, maybe it was getting to the house early, before the rest of the guys arrived and making coffee and doing some work on my own......at one of these times I think I started to feel like the house at 384 and a half or 384a as we like to call it....i started to feel like it was MY house....not the old owners.

it was funny today, as i was tearing out the ceiling, i noticed some newspapers bundled in the ceiling...

this only has significance because it was just last week that a guy doing some renovating found a mummified baby in the walls of the house he was working on. THis baby was buried in the wall in the early 1900's...the cause of death was natural apparently...the baby still had the umbilical cord attached.

anyhow - so the bundled up newspapers were just that. bundled up newspapers. i have no idea what they were doing in the ceiling. no drama, and i'm ok with that. solid.

the epic ordeal of designing a brand new kitchen when you have 4 bosses. ahh. i just try to nod and smile but once in a while i have to make up my mind...they ask me to give input, what do i REALLY THINK?

hm. i'm a little fatigued, but i'd go to the driving range right now if i could...

Ok, I'm not huge on the Hallmark holidays, but I have to admit, I just had a FANTASTIC weekend.

Friday night we attended a 'jack and jill' type party for Silvia's family's old good friends...excellent food and drink, fast excellent hot espressos.

Saturday we got up and headed north to Lion's Head, we rented a room at the Lion's Head Beach Motel, and that was that. Kitchenette and walkout to the beach - um, no-brainer. Too many mosquitos up at the property, we would have had to have slathered ourselves in bugspray just to survive.

Met up with Guido and Brita, and headed over to White Bluff to do a few routes. Sil, Guido and Brita all did DOLL MAN, and then I got on the excellent Hellraiser warmup, dropping the draws onto Hell on Earth and scoping the holds out. Just about got Hell on Earth on my 3rd go (and 2nd go too), but then it was time to leave, baby was restless, and it was getting late.

Back to town for a great dinner, and some hang time.

Then Sunday, I wake up just ITCHING to get back to White's and do some sending. I was determined to get this thing on my warmup, but alas, this did not occur. The plan was just to run over the White Bluff do 1 route, and leave, so that Guido and Brita could hit Lion's Head, and Sil and Lucy and I could fix the outhouse and still have time to hit some balls. Oh well, I got it on my second go on Sunday. Either I cheated or it's SUPER soft. More like .12b I would say. Whatever, it's a great route, a few big fun moves and it's over.

We headed out of town after finishing the outhouse by completing the sawing of the hole. Too easy.

Stopped and hit some golf balls too - 0 - and while Silvia was smacking those little white bastards, Lucy gave me her first kiss - what a cute father's day gift!

The drive home was complemented with the traditional CHAMPS burger and onion rings and greek salad. Oh, and root beer.

What an absolutely fantastic weekend, I just can't get over how fun it was...relaxing...mmmmmm.

it's about time for another post, but i can't think of a title, so I'll just use up some space here to fill it up. That way I get all of the nonsense

My job has been causing me some stress. The year (actually the 4 years) is almost done and I'm finding it less tolerable to deal with the problems in our school. It upsets me that so little has changed since September.

It's been a super busy year, work, family/home, climbing....and change is in the air...so many changes that it makes me think about who i am, what will be left of 'me' once we have moved to a new house and I have a new job and iyma is in grade 7 and Lucy is in daycare and Sil is back at work and if I ever get back on real rock and man, my friends, who i have barely been able to hang out with for the last year at least....

It all makes me kind of tired actually. Well, maybe not enough sleep makes me tired. My fault though, obviously.

On a more positive note, Sil's birthday party was decent - we had some good friends come over and help us drink a 30L keg of Sleeman Cream Ale. That was fun.

Iyma had her poetry reading last night. Her poem is first in the published work. It's called "POEM".

The Sens, I hate to say it, are getting their asses whooped by Anaheim. Oh well, I guess it's not their year after all.

Climbing in the garage tonight. Maybe it's time to send the black problem...SOMEONE!

do I really think that the people I admire sit around worrying if something they want to do is unreasonble or not?

do they even care if it's possible?

when you are a kid and you really want something, you just ask and ask and ask or try try try to get it. Over and over. and over. and over. and over.

and over.

who cares if it's possible or not, ANYTHING is possible.

maybe through trying there is a lesson to be learned or a new path to be found!

isn't that the point? follow your cheese filled pizza crust dreams? maybe it's possible that your dreams are all too easy to achieve and you might just find something way beyond your PREVIOUS dreams to dream about....imagine THAT!

like when you are a kid and all you want to do is be able to drive a car or motorcycle or be a fireman or something. then it happens and suddenly, the one thing that was a fantasy-like dream has become your reality - and you think :

"man, I can't believe how bad I wanted this, and it's all so WORTH IT!"

....2 minutes later......

"wow, I really want ___________ ."

or whatever...it goes on and on if you let it.

Starting over. My last post (deleted / lost / gone somewhere else)
was hilarious and creative. I hope this one doesn't totally suck,

Well well...

Day 1, Saturday, 4am, alarm goes off. THIS is March Break?!!!

coffee. coffee again.

This IS March Break!

Car packed, the McBurney clan drives to Tennessee, over 1400 KM with
Lucy and Iyma in 15 hours. Not bad.
Mike and Linc arrive shortly after us. And the epic minivan with
NEVERLOST containing: Trisha, Trish, Alejandra, Adam and Shawn,
arrived at shortly after GOD KNOWS WHEN. Sometime in the middle of
the night. But this is only the first night.

The cabin is sweet, but doesn't have enough beds for everyone - but
people seem to make do, except Mike who only has a sense of self
preservation when he is Trad climbing. Even then it's a bit weak.

Day 2, Sunday, clock? time? gimme a break, it's a vacation!

Canada Invades Tennessee.

We get up what feels like early-ish get lunches and breakfasts and
coffees and stuff. Mike and Linc? Yeah, they were gone before
anyone was even out of bed.

Foster Falls! YEAH! ROCK! The sweet sandstone cliffs of Foster
Falls. After a pretty straightforward approach, the climbs started
to go up.

Adam warms up with a sweet .11c onsight (The Hoosier), Iyma put up
the weirdest, funkiest, sketchiest, scariest, most dangerous .9
(Moving Target) I have ever climbed. I have to say - I was pretty
impressed. Lincoln and Mike were off working their project 5.13a
'Darkie The Bum Beast'. The Lucy was challenging on day 1. To say
the least. Morgan and I started the trip off well by choosing 2
excellent routes (that didn't even LOOK good) to warm up. Guys, find
routes that have stars when you want to climb something, trust me.
My hands are still healing. Moving on...

AL and BRYDEN show up - out of nowhere. Ok, not so true, I knew
there was a chance we'd see Al, but still - it was sweet that they
showed up. They had been to OBED already and TWALL, now it was time
for some FOSTER FALLS! But they didn't FALL much! Al got his first .
12a flash on Stun Gun - sweet work dude! Back to the cabin for hot
tub, food and alcohol of many kinds.

Day 3, Monday - TENNESSEE WALL.

hot. so hot.

driving from the cabin to T-Wall was uneventful but a bit
long....however......

HELLO? Why isn't the entire universe raving about this place?
Yosemite - git ouuuuuut! Squamish - pshaw! TWall makes Indian Creek
look like a chossy pile of crumbled boulders! Ok - maybe that's an
exaggeration - but still. Awesome. The approach is just the right
length for a decent warmup (right Lincoln?), and offered some
interesting landscape. There had just been a forest fire a couple of
weeks ago and there were charred trees everywhere. Freaky. I think
Iyma took some pix of that - we'll have to see. Some of the bottoms
of HUGE trees were charred to an 8 inch diameter so it really looked
like they were going to fall down RIGHT THERE AND THEN. But they
didn't.

T WALL: Gorgeous sandstone cracks of all sizes and grades. And LOTS
of them. But hot. Really hot. Luckily, being a genius, i found a
lovely air-conditioned alcove in the rock for our hideout for Lucy.
We are learning. Find a place off the trail to set up camp with the
baby. Somewhere in the shade. Mike and Adam were the heroes of the
day, putting up lots of routes for everyone to toprope. How
selfless. I even managed to put up my first trad route in ages.
Without soiling my pants. But it was close.

Seeing as how the drive there was so long, I made the executive
decision on the way home to take a shortcut. MUCH to the delight of
everyone. Especially Silvia. I SWEAR it was shorter. Distance
anyways. More cultural too.

Back at the cabin, more food and drinking and hot tub and silliness.

Day 4, Tuesday - FOSTER FALLS AGAIN! YEAH!

Now that we have the feel for the crag, we're starting to get a bit
warmed up - we know what to do with Lucy to maximize our climbing
possibilites. Sil and I actually get in 6 routes each! Not bad.
Sil is leading for the first time in 2 years, since becoming
pregnant! Nice! As for me, I'm sketching on everything, even easy
stuff!? Weird, but at least I'm out there, enjoying rock climbing
with my family in beautiful weather with friends away from smelly
Toronto. YEAH! We head down to a further section of the cliff and
Shawn and I put up a nice little .11c, which Iyma walks up to and
flashes on toprope only because I don't let her lead it (bad dad).
She totally 5.9ed it.

Rest day coming up - time to partaay! No details are really sticking
out. Every night was a party. BBQ, HOT TUB, FOOD and DRINKING.

Day 5, Wednesday - REST DAY.

Wisely, Lincoln stays home, reads, does everyone's laundry (dirty
boy, folding the girlies lacy panties, oh, and the hairy boys
underwear too...), and rests. The rest of the Invasion was having
nothing of that.

The McBurney clan heads out to meet the elder McBurneys (Andrew's
parents) for golf, food and driving around all over the place to
visit Tennessee's slightly less than spectacular natural bridge.
Still, time well spent. I shot a 47 on 9 holes - the sand the sand
the sand. i swear I lost too many shots to the sand. DAMN!

Now the epic minivan. NEVERLOST. Never sensible? REST DAY?! They
drive for hours to the Jack Daniel's distillery where they spend
their money on some vintage Jack and paraphernalia. Nice. You
should hear Mike talking about buying a 1954 bottle of Jack. Ask
him. As if this wasn't enough, the restful crew decides to head up
to Nashville for some partying! WOO! Coyote Ugly, WOO! There's no
place I'd rather be peed on. They got back late. Really late.
That's when they got up too. Crazy people.

Day 6, Thursday - Foster Falls / Rock City.

We hike in to Foster's with my parents, do a couple of easy routes
and it starts raining - time to head out of there! Iyma and Lucy and
Sil head back along the top of the cliff while I drop by Lincoln and
Mike in the Darkie cave to see how the project is coming along. Mike
is now 2 hanging the route and Lincoln is just about to get on for
his first post warmup climb of the day. Darkie the Bum Beast. Aptly
named.
Lincoln sends project. Not that we ever doubted. The guy is
somewhat determined and it's usually pretty easy to know if he's
going to send. He is. If there is a shred of positivity in his tone
about a route, it's going down SOON. As far as anyone would know, it
could be his 100th 5.13a. He's pretty casual about the whole thing.
A little whoop at the top and the celebration is
over...neeeeeeeeeeeeeext.
Back to the cabin.

The minivaners went bouldering at Rock City. On a rain day? i think
they were still suffering from the day before so it's probably just
as well...they got a few problems in and got REAL WET too.

Partying, drinking, eating, re-enacting scenes from Coyote Ugly.
Beer/pee incident. Ground slack-lining.

Day 7, Friday - waaaaa! LAST day of climbing for us. Raining!

After hanging out for half a day at the cabin in the rain, my parents
brought us lunch and then took Sil and Iyma and Lucy for a drive to
see Sewanee University. I climbed with all the others at Fosters.
Magically, when I arrived at the crag, the sun came out! I managed
to get on a few routes, I even cheat-hauled my ass up Darkie the Bum
Beast once. There is a pretty tough move in there that I just never
quite got - those guys are machines! Amazingly, Iyma and Sil and
Lucy showed up later in the day and we climbed more!!! Yeah! Iyma
tried her hand on a .12a. There was only 1 move on the route that
she didn't flash - pretty sweet! Too bad she was never able to do
that move - otherwise she might have sent that route! I force fed
Shawn the .11c and by golly, he LIKED it. Next time you climb with
that guy, make him try something hard.
We stayed until dark, squeezing as much climbing out of the day,
until Shawn ended up cleaning the last route on toprope by headlamp.
Just the way we like it.

The minivaners went to the SMOKE HOUSE for buffet, while the rest of
us stayed home and tried to eat all the leftovers. i think we almost
succeeded...

Day 8, Saturday - drive home.

Well, Linc and Mike went to TWall and climbed more. Lincoln led a
sweet (scary) classic trad line! I told Mike to make him do one
since he brought his 'rack' that he has never used. Mike did more
crazy death defying shit again.

The rest of us drove home. The NEVERLOST team left a full hour
before the McBurneys, and arrived a full 2 hours after, but managed a
2 hour meal, 200KM detour, $100 speeding ticket and possibly a few
curses too. Nevermind the fact that after their epic drive they went
straight to Guido's party to demonstrate their Coyote Ugly
routine....ah.....

Day 9, Sunday - isn't everyone recovering today? Nope, Lincoln and
Mike, remember them, they're still climbing! Now they are in
Kentucky, givin' 'er at the Solar Collector....nice work guys. See
ya, WOULD wanna be ya.

That's it, that's all. I've missed all the important details.
Mentioned nothing about how amazing everyone was in helping us out
with Lucy. Oops....our friends were SO amazing with her. Yoga
mornings with Trish. Ok, it was just Trish doing Yoga...Trisha,
always up early....reading, hanging
out.....Alejandra.......crazy.......girl. 'McBurney, COME ON, lead
something!!'

I can't sum it all up. It was more fun than I can write about.
Maybe I'll re-write this when I'm feeling crazy sometime.

wow - what a way to turn 35....

-no sleep
-broke my windshield with audio gear for school dance dj-ing that the kids practically boo-ed me out of the school for
-hours and hours of driving through the clogged arteries of downtown toronto
-i could go on and on about things that have happened today and over the last few days and months, but it's just depressing, and I want to get back to a positive happy place....so....

THEN FINALLY

-awesome dinner and hang time with the family, new coat and pants and buddha board...and I should have NO TROUBLE sleeping tonight.

It all turns around when I got home. It's an OMEN. Home and family are truly the most important things in my life....my girls! Of course, climbing is trotting happily along (usually) behind home and family. Occassionally it races along side a bit - which is exciting - and that's how I like it - balanced insanity - right on the edge! YEAH!

Thanks to all my great friends for being there for me especially to cheer me up when times are rough!! I really hope I can do the same for you when you need it!

Perfect sending weather.

Patrick, you are so right about heat in ice! That's why it's not necessary to feel the cold....

Let me explain. My buddy Patrick has informed us (reminded us really, cause we all learned this in high school science...right? well, I did anyhow.) that there is actually quite a bit of 'heat' stored in a block of ice. Until you get it down to 276 below 0 or something, which is impossible anyways.

Ok, so what.

This makes climbing in Kentucky easy, even in very cold temperatures! We just have to continue absobing heat from the environment around us, without losing any!!!! YEAH! SO I'm going to make sure to dress for sending this weekend baby!!!

Of course, a little extra chubby flab goes a long way towards keeping me warm, so these poor skinny people, while they might send well in perfect weather, they aren't really designed for year round living!

it's far too cold for rain.

so, i have a knot in my back...and it makes me want to not move.

but i'll move anyways, gad namit...

oh - and yesterday, i turn on my 'computer'. and nothing. monitor is broken....I will say this though: BenQ has said that they will repair it for free and mail it to me. All I have to pay for is one-way delivery. Or I can drop it off. Steeles and McCowan. Not too far from work...I get the sense that if I had a sweet apple monitor, that it wouldn't break. I've never had this kind of trouble with any computer before.

wow-and Silvia just noticed that our home phone isn't working again...it's been epic for the last month...working, not-working, kind-of working...we've been on the phone with Rogers at least 10 times. They have 'fixed' the problem maybe 3 times already. THe great thing is that it takes a 12 hour window with these guys...12 hours that we are expected to sit at home and wait for them to show up and fix our line. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And then it's not fixed. But I'm sure they will still charge us for the repair AND the home phone service for the last month....

CLIMBING. I love climbing to that point where I know I can do something, but I'm just too jammed to do it. Like I tried it so many times, but were too tired to send by the time I figured it out. That way, I KNOW I'm geeeeeeeeeeeevin' 'er.

Hey, Sil just 'fixed' the phone. Hilarious. I SAID to check the phone in the bedroom but no - straight to 411...turn out the phone in the bedroom was off the hook. Ha haaaaaaaaaaaa hahahaha. We are idiots! NICE!

I've been bouldering lots, so I'm a little concerned that my crimping and pocket skills are lacking and especially my ability to climb an entire route...we'll see - we are headed off to Kentucky next weekend - this is my birthday weekend with the boys...it's been a while...yo.

Maybe I should get off the couch now. Saturday morning sore back. Ouchie.

For years I have allowed myself to be inspired by other people. Especially that crazy subset of people that gets up really early in the morning. And from those, especially the ones that do it to go workout. I have always found it amazing that people would do this. Who wouldn't rather sleep a little extra? Well, after all those long years of wonderment, I finally got out of bed and went for a run. I think I'm getting addicted, because now I'm starting to get up earlier and earlier to run.

I guess my advice to those wanting their inspiration to take them somewhere would be......don't wait too long to try it out...

Take the plunge.

hump day is good - i'm feeling a whole lotta better today, and it's not just the sudafed (read chrytal meth) that i have been taking.

really looking forward to energy and not being dependant on facial tissue (it's not Kleenex, remember?). i actually jogged to my car today, the fastest i've moved since saturday afternoon.

The more I look at pictures of him, the more I think it is the same kid that Silvia and I saw when we were climbing at Ceuse in France for our honeymoon. This kid was taking a major hissy fit though. He was having trouble getting to the 2nd bolt on some easy 5.13b .....pffffffffff. Tall guy.

you see, i just haven't had a lot to write about lately.

work has been quite stressful - not the teaching part....

little lucy and iyma are just growing up acting cute.

sil and i are learning a whole new life. feeling tired a little more often due to Lucy waking in the middle of the night 5 times. putting a little more effort into eating properly and getting some exercise. still - i'm finding that keeping my weight down is really difficult, even if I don't eat bad food. struggling.

climbing? well, it has it's ups and downs - but mostly, I'm just happy when we get to go climbing and forget about everything else. focus on UP. i'm hoping to take a long weekend in Kentucky with Lincoln maybe in February if we get some good looking weather...it will be like a little test for me, to see how I feel on rock...

we are organizing a fun trip to Tennessee....that's pretty cool. We'll go for a week and maybe my parents will come over from Florida to visit and play some golf as well! iyma is pretty jazzed about this trip, she wants to get on some challenging climbs - maybe even some trad lines and bouldering. we still need a few more people to fill the cabin though.

I'm trying to do a few things:
-be a good dad/husband ( i still can't believe i'm married! i promised my grade 2 teacher i never would)
-website for access
-earthday for access
-rep for youth climbing in eastern canada
-union rep at my school
-run the concert band at my school
-organize climbing trips?

and a few other little projects at home...

AND I still haven't had an espresso from Ken's new Silvia. Not good.

just kidding. the family is starting to think about March Break. We think Lucy will be old enough to take a pretty serious road trip by early march. we are thinking about heading back to North Carolina - Guido and Iyma and I had fun there last time - time for a re-visit maybe...there is so much rock to climb, no shortage of spots to check out.

funny moment:

I'm sitting in the kitchen about to make my morning double long

I went to the gym without any of my ladies last night. a solo attempt at climbing at the head of Rock.

rough. After an hour, I thought I had been there 3. I though the gym was about to close and it was 9:10pm. You know when you do something that is normally not too killer challenging for you....but for some reason it feel impossible right then?

I hate that. It's ok though, I forced myself to continue climbing through the sucking so bad because I'm hoping it means that after some good rest, I'll actually be able to do something at an ever so slightly higher level. I'm sore now though...real sore.

I actually don't feel like writing either - I'm too tired, no inspiration today.

Keep going.

Last night I was FRUSTRATED. Frustrated, and I forgot that FRUSTRATION = MOTIVATION.

Too bad I only remembered today. I would have been psyched last night if I had remembered. I was still a bit pysched though.....just a bit....anyhoo.

TTC SUCKS

Man. Pouring rain and cold today - unpleasant. Getting off my final bus near work today, I've got the Audioslave pouring out into my brain as I head for the front door of the bus. The driver says nothing to me but gestures at me lazily with his thumb for me to get off at the rear door. I honestly don't know why this pissed me off this morning but it seemed so rude. I always get off at the front, I find the new rear doors annoying to open and they take forever to close, I know as a passenger, it bugs me when people get off at the back because it takes so long for the bus to get going again after..... Anyhow, I should have told the guy to eat dirt, take a hike and yo mama or something but instead I smashed the rear doors open, they bounces and smashed back into me, bruising my left arm quite nicely. I'm such a baby. I have it in for the TTC lately, in the mornings they boast 'FREQUENT SERVICE' as being 10 minutes or less. That's why, if I miss the streetcar at 6:30am I wind up taking a 20 minute walk north to Bathurst Station....frequent service my ass. It's frustrating because while I'm walking north, 3 streetcars always pass me on the other side of the road, about 1 minute apart - they were probably hanging out at the station having a croissant together. bastards. i could rant forever today, it's a good thing it's Friday.

baby Lucy's first trip to the glen. she managed to sleep through
most of it...I'm sure it will grow on her.

hopefully not like a mole or fungus though.

and baby's first cold. she has the snot cannons raging. poor baby -
I can't help but just feel so bad for her - I actually feel guilty
that she's sick, like it's my fault or something...

whatever...it probably is, damned kids at my school coat me in germs
every second I'm there. i'm lucky to be alive and not have the west
nile norwalk sars bird flu by now. WNNSBF.

Right now it's 11:42 PM and Silvia is taking packing tape and applying
it to the couch to remove cat hairs and whatever
else.......lint.......who knows. she looks crazy.

CRAZY! We had our ducts cleaned today - so cleanliness is on the
mind..... I just ate 2 bagels with butter and cheddar. That makes 3
in 15 hours. I am a sick sick man.

once again, i dunno - sometimes the routine is the same but the results seem very strange.

maybe it's because i have been doing light weights twice a day to try and strengthen my shoulders

maybe it finally dawned on me that seeing Sil and Iyma and Lucy all peacefully sleeping away when I leave in the morning just makes me feel special

maybe i have finally got some purchase with my heels. they have finally dug in, and things are slowing down a bit so that I can have a bit of a broader outlook on everything

if it wasn't for the fact that I'm too old to get stronger without getting injured, bouldering would be awesome.

Patrick (Mr. FIRE-IT-UP) and Ken (Mr. SHAKE-IT-ALL-AROUND) and myself (Mr. DADDY'S-GOT-A-BRAND-NEW-BAG) had a lovely little climbing session last night...with some sending...and some trying...and grunting....and so on.

I still can't do a problem that I was close to doing this summer though, how annoying! At least the first 2 moves are getting easier. Unfortunately the next (and last) 2 moves are seeming harder or something!? WHATEVER! I'll just keep plugging away, and someday I'll send...or not.

Oh the drama, Gripped is having a little war about the whole Rockhead's thing....re-posts, and deleting posts, locking posts....censorship is everywhere! I wish I could just stop going to that website....

so - this morning i was perusing gripped.com bulletin board topics and there was a new one just SLAMMING Joe Rockhead's for everything from the state of their bathrooms to the speed at which they put up new climbs........bizarre post, totally railing on JR's. Pretty long and intense.

moments later, some dude "jon" has sent the Rockhead's post to the bottom of the page by replying to every topic on first page...bizarre. and even more bizarre is the locking of the Rockhead's post - so no one can reply to the post...I would think the post should just be removed rather than locked. best to speak to (email, or whatever) the original poster "GANDOLF", than to resort to these other tactics. they seem childish to me.

i would think that Rockhead's, being well-respected by most of it's members and climbers in general, could have used this as an opportunity to exhibit their coolness and ability to deal with bad vibes....ah well.

does this situation surprise me? no. should people be allowed to slam businesses or people on online public forums? hmmmm..... i guess there are legal restrictions on the types of things you are and are not allowed to say - so - other than that, I think that's the whole point of online forums, isn't it?

i think there is so much inter-connectivity in the climbing community that if Gripped really wants to protect Rockhead's or whatever is going on here.....they should just SAY some good stuff about them as a reply to the post - isn't that more powerful than cutting the whole thing off with no explanation? losing credibility is the other side of the equation.

A lot has gone on since my last entry!

Well, school started......I know I don't want to write about that......

Baby Lucy is so cute and happy lately, she is stating to get really cuddly in that super cute way, and less in the super needy shake-me-til-i'm-happy way. Great wife. Iyma is great.

THANKSGIVING!
Went up to Lion's Head to build the top of our out-building with my dad, while Iyma and Guido, and My Mom and Sil and Lucy hung out at a funky cottage that they rented. I was committed to climbing both days so I started early with my dad, and finished at around lunch. We just about finished it, sort of....here are a few pix:

Plus, being up there is so great.

last night marked the return of the bouldering session in the garage....

Lincoln - badass. Gets back from intense Lincoln-style road trip (.12d?!) takes 1 day of 'rest' - and then comes bouldering....great to see you man!

Al - badass. Appears out of the ether (was it ether?) and sends every project but 1.... time to set some new problems I guess - although, there are still a few that I haven't done yet....

Duane & Jules - out of the kindness of their hearts show up with food for me - so sweet - I owe you guys, that stuff really hit the spot. Duane, next time a little less climbing beforehand and you'll be MUCH happier...JULES! SHOES! NOW!!!

Lucy and Sil made a cameo appearance - Julie showing her superior skills in the handling of young Lucy when daddy made her cry.

All in all - a really fun night, thanks again.

Thanksgiving weekend 2006!

Could not have possibly asked for better weather than what we got - sunny and warm-ish - perfect climbing weather.

We drove up to Lion's Head and met my parents at WINDHAVEN....a cottage that we shared with them.

Pretty sweet.

I'll have to post a full trip report with pictures later....if I can get the pictures to work in some application....memory card difficulties...don't know why...high speed photo taking? filling up the memory card?

Not loving work today though.

the youth 'pre-comp-warmup-barbeque' preparations are coming along
well....

18 problems from V0- to V6/7 and I'll be adding more ASAP ...

Silvia has tried many of them, but I would love to see more people on
them before the comp - I am worried that they are too difficult for
the little people.........

And I need tape that isn't BLACK, DARK GREEN, BLUE, RED, YELLOW,
WHITE or SILVER....bright pink would be nice, camouflage would be
cool, brown, bright green - but it's hard to find STICKY tape in
these colours.... the identi-tape they sell at MEC and stuff doesn't
stay on the wall - it's NOT ideal. Beta please.

People - please, come try the problems.... do it for the kids. hee hee.

So, imagine you are 13 years old and on vacation back to homeland China with your mother. It's really nice to see family and be immersed in the culture of your birthright, right? Now, vacation is over, but mom has decided to stay in China and send you back to Canada to live with who....dad? Other relatives?

Without fully knowing the details, I'm able to fill in so many stories about why this is happening. NONE of them, no matter how I search my mind for possible scenarios, make me feel any better about this.

i'm sitting here at work - with all my cycling stuff on (the hardest part) ready to go home to my girls. i'm looking forward to being home. i'm praying for better-than-forcasted weather, some kind of miracle that will see us up north this weekend, working on the outhouse, possibly even doing a couple of routes or problems.

somehow, work is both desperately boring and incredibly inspiring. everyone i work with is amazing - i admire my students and my colleagues. but there's something about being so far away from my family........too much time spent travelling.

a nap would help RIGHT NOW. not going to happen, so I guess I had better RIDE before it RAINS!!

White Bluff parking

There have been some reports (thankyou Lincoln) of one of the parking areas for White Bluff being blocked off with stones, logs and boulders. For now, it is requested that climbers (and hikers etc...) for WHITE BLUFF park ONLY in the Forty Hills parking lot (owned and maintained by VOLUNTEER organization The Bruce Trail Association) another 200 meters around the corner.

little iyma.

and by little i mean big.

great kid, yesterday she was FREAKING OUT after her first day of
school, mentioning every 2 minutes that she was excited to be able to
go OUT for lunch on Fridays with her friends. so cute. she's great
with Lucy, which is really nice.

had an excellent climbing session with her too - she managed to take
a decent lead fall without epic-ing too much....although, she did
have a little freakout on the previous climb. we got through that
situation without too much trouble.

funny situation with her water container, i'll have to remember that
one:

her water has spilled ALL OVER the place on the carpet.

She really did NOT want to do what I was asking her to do. Little
punk. Oh well.

last day of "HOLIDAY"

We slept until 11am.

Still haven't finished breakfast at 12:38pm....feeding baby.......bathing baby........

I try not to think about work too much, I'll have lots of time for that at work.

Working is fine. It will be even more fine if I can get my LEFT shoulder to heal now. Out of the blue in the last week of August my left shoulder started bugging me REALLY bad, a bizarre turn considering I hadn't felt so fit and healthy and happy and strong in a LONG time. I guess it's part of my journey in climbing. Time to start again with careful climbing...

Maybe it's time to make Sil a latte and get to work on my house chores.......

I guess the best thing is to start at the beginning..........written from the perspective of Andrew with bracketed comments from [Silvia]

It all started in the middle of the night (2:30am) on Wednesday, August 9th.

Silvia: "Andrew.......I think my water broke........."

So we got up and read the documentation of what to do if the water breaks in the middle of the night and.......went back to sleep, with occasional mild contractions. In the morngin we called the midwives (PAM) at 8am. She advised us that while it can't wait forever, that we could still have a natural birth AT HOME up to 72 hours after the water breaking! phew!

Iyma (Andrew's daughter) was supposed to go to her day camp today, but, figuring that we would be having a baby on this day, we had her hang out with Silvia's sister and niece until late evening or if any developments came.......

We recorded mild contractions for much of the day and around 2:30pm, Silvia fainted! Scary! Time to call the midwives!

Our midwife Dena advises us to pick up some homeopathic medecine and CASTOR OIL (according to Dena "Castor Oil brings babies") to get the contractions going steady and strong, provided that Silvia was feeling well and strong.

Still, contractions were very mild and irregular, so around 3:25pm we went shopping and picked up some known labour inducers: we picked up CELERY, HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES AND CASTOR OIL! Yum...Silvia started ingesting this lovely concoction around 5pm.
Knowing what was coming (hey, I saw "Stand By Me"!), I mixed some GATORADE for Silvia to help with (de)hydration and stuff, once again, recommended by our wonderful midwife Dena!

Still mild contractions continued until around midnight, when Silvia had some BRIGHT SHOW! WOW! This was exciting for us, because by this point we were really hoping for serious labour to start, otherwise we knew we could possibly end up in the hospital because of the water already being broken for almost 24 hours by this point. We weren't too worried about the baby though because Silvia was still feeling lots of movement, so that was comforting. Around 1am that CASTOR OIL 'kicked in' and for the next several hours Silvia made several trips to the bathroom for various reasons.

It turned out that we weren't the only couple epic-ing on this full moon evening, 2 of Dena's (our main midwife at this point) other clients had their babies this night. One in her bathroom, by herself, and the other at the wrong hospital, not St. Joe's, before the midwives could even get there (or something like that....)!! Of course, we didn't know this information, but at 3am when a woman we have never met before rings our doorbell, I answer the door to:

"Hi! I'm Andrea, your backup midwife for tonight."

Andrea was fantastic too, we felt comfortable with her immediately. At this point (4am), we called Silvia's sister Natalina to pick up Iyma so that she could get some sleep and have some company. We promised to call as soon as things were really rolling so that Iyma could be in the house when the baby was born.

Andrea advised us, that since the contractions were still very irregular and not intense enough [but they were strong], to try and get some sleep and see what happens in the morning. Iyma had made up her bed so that Andrea would be able to use it, so that worked out really well. Following her advice Silvia and I slept for a few hours, waking to the occasional contraction, but definitely getting some rest. In the (real?!) morning Andrea went home to walk her dog, and asked us to page once the contractions were 45s. to 1 minute long and every 2-3 minutes. Well, no sooner had she gotten out the door, but did those contractions start! Fairly strong and regular, to the point where by 10:30am we decided to give her a call back. Boy were we ready to have this baby!!!! Let's go already!

Andrea arrived back at the house, letting us know that she was relieving Dena and Sherrene until they had a chance to catch up on some sleep after their crazy night of birth stories.

(I have to admit, my memory is a bit foggy on all of this! It was such an intense experience, and there was so much going on all the time.)

At some point, Dena and Sherrene arrived while I was mixing some Gatorade for Silvia, so when I came back into the room, everything had changed, and Andrea was gone!

Dena was pretty keen to get this labour going, and to do this, she had Silvia changing positions every hour or so, although Silvia figures it was about every 10 seconds! We ended up starting off in the shower, which was great for Silvia except for the standing part. After getting out of the shower Silvia was back on the bed! Dena examined Silvia, and let us know that she was at 6cm, and she said that Andrea may have been a bit generous saying that Silvia was at 5cm earlier, after all this was 7 hours later! Only 1cm in 7 hours?! This was a bit of news to us, but luckily, it only increased Silvia's motivation to get this thing GOING!

(Never mind having a Leo, this baby wasn't even going to be born in 2006 at this rate!!!)

Changing positions DEFINITELY intensified the contractions, first Silvia was lying on her side, then sitting on the toilet. I honestly thought we were going to have the baby on (in?) the toilet. That's where Silvia started to have the urge to push. Then I TOTALLY thought we were going to have the baby standing up in the hallway, then I ABSOLUTELY thought we were going to have the baby with Silvia on her side on the bed. Once we made it onto the bed, the baby's head was starting to be visible and at some point one of the first things the midwives told us about our baby was that it had a full head of hair, one of those curly locks was making an early appearance!

Then Dena said something that surprised us both:

"This is something that you don't often expect a midwife to say, I would like to have you lie down on your back, with some pillows and Andrew behind you to lean on."

Silvia was a machine through all of this by the way. She didn't say too much, but she sure did express her desire to push in a powerful way, she was amazing! By now, things were moving so fast, I didn't have time to even make a phone call to let Iyma know that her sibling was about to be born! Andrea was called back over to the house to be the 3rd midwife.

With a lot of vocal coaching, Silvia really got into the pushing and showed her strength and power! The baby was coming out nicely at first, and then there was a bit of a stall. She was slowed down momentarily when part of the cervix was blocking the baby from completing it's journey, however, Dena was able to work through this situation 'fairly easily' ["I don't know how easy that was!!"] with some incredible coaching and encouragement. This intensified the pushing and Silvia was working SO HARD!

The baby's head was finally crowning and Silvia was told to stop pushing momentarily when the baby's head was fully out....and then a few more big pushes with lots of help from everyone (Andrew helping Silvia to 'crunch', Dena giving the baby some pulls, Sherrene helping with Sil's legs, this should be a team Olympic event!) and out came our baby!!!!!!!! The baby wasn't breathing right away so the cord was clipped and Andrea took the baby to be suctioned, but on her way, the baby started to cry, so she brought 'her' right back! It's a GIRL!! I mean, SHE'S a girl!

She lay on Silvia's chest staring into our eyes, not crying or fussy, just hanging out with mom and dad! I finally managed to call Iyma and have her brought back over to the house to meet her new little sister. The second she saw her new sister she burst into tears! So amazing!!!

It took us a couple of days, but we finally came up with a name too:

Lucille Ofelia McBurney was born at 5:08pm on August 10th

Jennifer and all the participants in our pre-natal classes - THANKYOU! The classes helped us to have the birth that we wanted, it gave us confidence and skills...AMAZING! We are so glad to have shared those classes with all of you, and really appreciate your stories and experiences. Silvia kept your stories in mind throughout her labour, and it helped with "staying zoned" and feeling "empowered" and listening to Jennifer's voice in her mind......

Turns out most babies gain between 1/2 and 1 ounce per day at this time in their life. Lucy, however has gained 12 ounces in the last 8 days....not bad! Pam was very happy - she said they like nice chubby babies.
